90-acre farm in West Cork a good opportunity at €6k/acre

Land in the Macroom area has punched above its weight in terms of values over the last decade or more — testament to the lively local agricultural scene, dominated by the dairy industry.

A 90-acre parcel of it has just come on the market with Ballyvourney-based auctioneers Michael Creedon & Co. Such a sizeable holding is, naturally, attracting plenty of attention, according to selling agent Michael Creedon.

“It’s in Coolnacheragh, on the old road out of Ballymakeera towards Macroom,” says Michael, referring to the original main road before the recently-opened Macroom bypass. “It’s about 3km east of the village.”

The executor sale involves the land only, with a house and outbuildings being retained, he points out. With ample road frontage, however, access to the land is very good. The original access was, in fact, through the farmyard, but the owners have put in two new entrances since. 

There is no electricity on site but with the River Sullane forming part of the boundary, water supply is assured.

“At the moment, you have about 40 acres of it in pasture, with the rest of it of mixed quality… It’s a farm that has been let out for the last 15 or 20 years and the rest of the land could be brought back again but it is in need of attention.”

According to Michael, there is a healthy level of interest and with the price guide at €550,000 (€6,100/acre), this farm represents a rare opportunity to purchase a substantial holding.
