Right across the road from the imposing 17th-century pile of Kanturk Castle (built, but never fully completed, by McDonagh McCarthy as a defence against the English), a 23-acre roadside land parcel is new to the market with Blarney-based auctioneer Dan Fleming.
The North Cork market town of Kanturk is well known for its vibrant agricultural scene, in a part of Co Cork where a number of other similar-sized market towns bear witness to the strength of the fabric of progressive rural life in this part of the world.
With the proximity of a castle, it’s no surprise to find that a good deal of this land holding is bounded by old estate walls.
Another feature that forms part of the boundary is the River Dalua, which runs along much of the holding’s eastern flanks.
Kanturk town centre is just 1km or so to the north, while the towns of Banteer and Newmarket are 4km and 10km away, respectively.
“It’s a lovely bit of land,” says Dan, “and it has grown maize, so that will give you a very strong indication of the quality of the land.
“There’s lovely alluvial soil in it.”
The property has a large shed, and features a Gothic bridge spanning part of the property.
Along with the estate wall, the bridge is another vestige of its former life as part of a landed-gentry owned holding.
The fact that it’s located so close to Kanturk opens up the possibility of a prospective purchaser getting planning permission to build a house on the holding.
“There is definitely that possibility,” confirms Dan, who says that the price expectation is “between €10,000 and €12,000 per acre.”
The final price will be interesting, as this holding is another one where clients from both farming and non-farming backgrounds will be interested.
