Ballyporeen farm sale has link to Ronald Reagan
He visited the village of his ancestors back in 1984, raised a pint of beer in the local pub, was greeted warmly, and then he left.
One of the legacies of that visit was an enduring relationship he maintained with the owners of what became known as the “Ronald Reagan Pub”. It was sold back in 2004, its interior carefully dismantled, and then reassembled by its new owners at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California.
The people who owned the famous pub are the vendors of a 33-acre holding located in the townlands of Glennacunna and Gorteeshal, adjacent to Ballyporeen.
The property will go under the hammer next Tuesday, January 31, at 3pm in Corrin Mart, Fermoy.
According to selling agent Éamonn O’Brien of CCM, there is already quite a bit of interest in this piece of land, with an offer already submitted that is shy of the price being sought.
“There are 33 acres of land wrapped around the village,” says Éamonn, who adds that the soil coming from this farm isn’t the batch that was famously being shipped to the USA and sold to customers looking for little pieces of the Reagan ancestral turf.
It is, however, “good quality land”, according to the agent, consisting of good grassland with a small section in the middle not so free-draining.
Being so close to the village, 3.4 acres of it is zoned commercial, while a further 3.4 acres is zoned residential.
The holding is serviced with mains water and electricity, and there is a stable in one of the fields (known as The Soldiers’ Field).
The land can be sold in two lots, depending on how demand evolves on the day of the auction. The price expectation is €8,000-€8,500 per acre.
