IFA looks to ‘renewal’ as governance tackled

Mr McDonald previously served as chief executive of Horse Sport Ireland and Macra na Feirme and also worked with the IFA in the past.

On being appointed IFA director general last year, he said he was very conscious of the responsibilities the position brings with it. He said he was looking forward to progressing the organisation and the issues affecting the farming community.

Mr McDonald, 44, who grew up on a dairy, beef and pig farm in Crossabeg, Co Wexford, holds a Master’s in Economics from UCD.

IFA president Joe Healy told the meeting that Mr McDonald’s appointment is part of the association’s ongoing renewal.

Under the chairmanship of Teddy Cashman, the Lucey Implementation Committee brought forward recommendations covering the key issues of governance, transparency, IFA income, and financing.

Mr Healy said Mr McDonald brings with him a strong reputation for successful management of organisations and has a great knowledge of the issues facing farming.
