Green ribbons focus on mental health
Macra launched its Green Ribbon campaign at the National AGM in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, with the aim of distributing 2,500 ribbons.
See Change, the National Stigma Reduction Partnership, and partner organisations including Macra are taking part in the national initiative.
Speaking at the launch, Macra national president Seán Finan said: “We are happy to be involved with the See Change Green Ribbon Campaign again this year.
“I am encouraging members across the county to distribute the green ribbons and start a conversation with their family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues about mental health as we try to challenge the stigma that exists in this country with mental health problems.”
See Change estimates that over 500,000 green ribbons will be distributed nationwide free of charge by organisations such as Macra na Feirme to spark a national conversation about mental health in boardrooms, break-rooms, chat rooms, clubhouses, arts venues, college campuses, and around kitchen tables throughout Ireland.
The objective is to make the month of May every year synonymous with promoting open conversation on mental health.
Mr Finan continued: “You don’t need to be an expert to start talking about mental health or have all the answers.
“Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is to let someone know that you are there for them and simply listen.
“Help and support is available to people who may be experiencing difficulties and I would encourage people who are suffering never to feel as if they are alone and not to suffer in silence.”
Cara O’Mahony, chair- person of Macra’s Rural Youth committee added: “Macra na Feirme continues to work on the promotion of positive mental health through many initiative like our mental health seminar ‘Let’s Talk’ at our annual conference in Cork last October and Mitchelstown Macra’s recent screening of Pilgrim Hill in Corrin Mart and the Green Ribbon campaign for the month of May.
“Macra na Feirme clubs across the country engage in a wide range of competitions, activities and events. We always encourage young people to get involved.
"Through social interaction and participation we promote positive mental and physical health.”
