Dick Roche says EU reversal on mandate for bioethanol defies logic
The EU has dropped its target of “at least 10%” of public transport in EU member states to come from renewable energy sources by 2020.
In an article he wrote for Euractiv.com, he said this shift has created a biofuel “zombie industry”.
“The Commission’s ‘logic’ is impossible to fathom,” said Mr Roche.
“Bio-ethanol helps meet climate change targets, reduces Europe’s dependence on fossil fuel imports, helps bridge the gap in animal feed, stimulates regional development, creates jobs, gives farmers a valuable income stream and helps give Europe a cleaner road transport energy mix.”
Mr Roche said EU’s move to turn its back on biofuel was “a catastrophic policy reversal that makes no sense, and is an indictment of the EU policy process”.
