Macra news: Members set to get their jiving shoes on for feet-tapping fundraiser

In a national first for the organisation, a Macra na Feirme ‘Strictly Come Jiving’ contest will take place in Co Westmeath next month.

On May 21, the Greville Arms Hotel in Mullingar will transform into a ballroom, as couples take to the floor in a bid to impress a panel of judges and the public.

Macra is currently seeking 50 couples to take part. Jiving partners do not need to be from the same club or county, with couples from across clubs welcome.

There will be prizes and trophies to the value of €1,000 for the top three couples. Winners will be selected via a judges’ vote and purchased votes.

Entry will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis, with an entry fee of €200 per couple. Each couple should register with kmarkey@ macra.ie. Couples will receive two sponsorship cards.

Entry on the night will be €10 with a valid Macra membership card and €15 for non Macra members.

Couples will step onto the floor from 8.30pm and as well as all that jiving, there will music, finger food, and raffles.

Meanwhile, Meath Macra is organising this year’s national talent competition.

Participants will compete in eight categories — solo instrumental music; disco/modern dancing; solo singing; novelty act; Mastermind; set dancing; comedy; and pop/folk/ballad group.

Two semi-finals will take place in May, on Sunday, May 1, at The Source Arts Centre, Thurles, Co Tipperary, and on Saturday, May 14, at St James Hall, Athboy, Co Meath.

The closing date for entries is next Monday.

Entry forms and rules for this year’s talent competition are available on the download section of www.macra.ie
