Martin Barker’s 360° Free Farrowing Pen won the Oxford Farming Conference/ Royal Agricultural Society of England RASE Practice with Science award last month.
Martin Barker’s 360° Free Farrowing Pen has many advantages

Launched in 2012, the pen was developed by Martin Barker’s Midland Pig Producers, one of the UK’s largest pig production companies.

It allows sows turn 360 degrees while in confinement.

This increases the sow’s nesting ability and reduces her stress.

It takes no more space than a conventional farrowing crate.

The benefits are an increased pig weaning weight, which results in fewer days to reach slaughter.

Sows eat 10%, so are better prepared for their next litter.

Extra production in these pens facilitates investment payback within 18 months.

The design is safe for farm staff to operate, and allows them a better view of the animals and closer interaction with the sows.

Oxford Farming Conference director Tina Barsby said: “This progressive farmer has combined multiple innovations in sow movement, lighting and temperature, tackling several welfare issues.

"The end product is really impressive, and modifications to the design and materials have resulted in a patented pen design that has reduced in price and really seems to be adding value to the pig farmers who use it.”

The 360° farrower can be retrofitted into existing farrowing rooms.
