Survey underlines broad support for Common Agricultural Policy role

There is broad support among Europeans for the contribution of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to the European Commission’s top priorities, according to a new Eurobarometer survey.

Over 80% of respondents consider the role of the CAP “important” or “very important” for stimulating jobs and growth and for supporting the role of the farmer in the food chain.

Respondents also agreed that the CAP contributes to improving trade relations between the EU and the rest of the world (66%) and to the smooth running of the EU single market (65%).

EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Phil Hogan said he welcomed the growing importance that citizens are putting on agriculture and rural areas.

He said he appreciates that 70% of Europeans believe that the EU is fulfilling its role in securing the European food supply.

Copa and Cogeca, the European umbrella body for farmers and co-ops, described the findings as “great news”.

Secretary-general Pekka Pesonen said he is also pleased to see the majority of Europeans agree that the CAP benefits all citizens, not only farmers.

In addition, the survey shows that consumers appreciate the benefits of forests in absorbing carbon dioxide, he said.
