While 9 acres on the eastern boundary is in forestry, the bulk of the farm (40 acres) is of top quality, according to the selling agent:

“It’s 40 acres of prime land and it’s quite close to Howe Strand. It’s all in stubble at the moment and part of a bigger farm that’s being sold because the owner has retired.”

As the forestry land is 14 years old, premiums on it are insignificant in relation to the overall value but the 40 acres are described by Henry as “easily worked and as good as you will find anywhere in the country” and the holding has excellent road frontage.

The afore-mentioned Howe Strand was the scene of a skirmish during the War of Independence in 1920, when the Coastguard and Telegraph Station building was attacked by local Volunteers who forced its surrender with the capture of seven men.

In contrast to the incidents of 95 years ago, the setting at the appropriately-named Seaview is as tranquil as you’ll find anywhere along the coast. The property is 15km from Bandon and 32km from Cork Airport. Asking price is €650,000 (€13,300/acre).
