ICA news: Lombardstown guild sends call out for new members
The guild, founded in 1948, has just a dozen members but morale is good, says guild secretary Barbara Allshire.
“Morale isn’t bad really. Those of us who are left are quite enthusiastic.”
Next Thursday’s fashion evening will feature jewellery, bags, shrugs and other fashion accessories showcased by Impulse, Mallow.
“She’ll give us ideas about what to put with what. But it’s more than just fashion.
There will be baking stands, hopefully gluten-free baking stands too, greeting cards and Christmas decorations.” Barbara’s daughter, Jill Kerly, will display the greeting cards.
“Jill joined ICA at one point but isn’t able to attend at the moment. We’re hoping next week’s event will get some people thinking ‘oh, they do quite a lot – why don’t I join?’”
Reduced membership means the guild hasn’t been able to secure funding for art classes this year, something they’ve enjoyed for many years now.
“Yes and no,” says Barbara when asked if she’ll miss the art. “I have so many pictures I don’t know what to do with them. I enjoy art but we’ll give it a miss this year and see how we go,” says Barbara.
A resilient, upbeat guild – members’ age ranges from 60s to 80s – they did succeed in securing a grant for yoga.
“We’ve started yoga classes on a Wednesday night. These continue until October 21.”
Last year, Lombardstown ICA got to the final of the Cork Federation table quiz, they had current Cork county mayor John Paul O’Shea in to talk and they hosted a Tupperware display courtesy of Mary Hayes. A gardening talk from Deirdre at Dairygold Garden Centre yielded some good ideas for getting rid of green fly and sterilising soil.
“I’m a gardener but I haven’t got around to using the ideas yet,” says Barbara, who has been guild secretary for 10 years.
“In Lombardstown, it’s a permanent job. No one else will take it. You’re supposed to stop after three years!”
Members are looking forward to seeing Menopause, The Musical shortly. Meanwhile, some proceeds from next Thursday night’s fashion event (it kicks off at 8pm on October 15 and costs €5) will go to Marymount Hospice.
Lombardstown Guild meets at 8pm on the first Tuesday of the month in Glantane Community Centre. New members welcome.
