Roundwood central to future forestry success
Addressing the ‘Talking Timber’ event in Tullow, Co Carlow, he praised Teagasc’s efforts to provide forest owners with a chance to access information about selling their timber.
It was the first in a series of Teagasc talks on the timber sales process, harvesting options and the way in which timber value can be maximised.
Mr Hayes said presentations by the Irish Forestry and Forest Products Association, showed the range of timber categories required by modern sawmills and the factors that determine log quality, value and purchase by the sawmills.
“Forest owners can increase the quality and value of their timber by following best forest management practice centred around timely and good thinning practice,” said Mr Hayes. Transport is also key to the sector’s development.
“To this end, the Forestry Programme has provided for almost €28m of funding towards the building of roads over the six-year programme period,” said Mr Hayes.
“This will enable forest holders to carry out first thinnings and generate an early source of income from their forest.”
