Change in contest format to reflect farmers’ diverse talents
The competition, now in its 17th year, is aimed at farmers under 35 years who have at least three years’ experience in agriculture.
This year the format has changed, as representatives from each farming sector will be chosen in every county before being shortlisted.
Also this year, sector prizes will be presented alongside the overall prize of a travel bursary to allow the winner look at farming practices abroad.
Macra na Feirme national president Seán Finan said: “It’s a positive and exciting time in farming and this competition is an ideal platform to highlight the strength and ambition of the industry.”
Farmers are judged by a panel of agricultural experts under categories such as business initiative, efficiency, farm safety, environmental protection awareness, and community involvement.
FBD company secretary, Conor Gouldson, said: “For 45 years now FBD has been committed to fostering the next generation of Irish farmers and is delighted to continue our sponsorship of this showcase event that encourages young farmers to be a champion for their sector.
“This is a dynamic time for young farmers who are expanding their farms to meet the increasing global demand for Irish produce.”
IFA president Eddie Downey added: “The FBD Young Farmer of the Year award provides our young farmers with a wonderful opportunity to display their talent, innovation and determination to drive our industry.
“Since it began, we have had very worthy winners of this prestigious title and I know this year will be no different. The awards for each sector reflect the diverse talent that exists among the farming community”.
The current Young Farmer of the Year is Seán O’Donnell from Ballina, Co Mayo.
The dairy farmer beat off stiff competition from more than 200 other farmers and had only begun farming full-time six years before winning the title.
He had been working in construction up until 2008.
