UCC celebrates all things Macra
It is the first time that the initiative has been organised, and events officially kicked off on Monday with a ‘Women in Farming’ talk.
The talk, which took place in the college’s West Wing, welcomed a diverse range of women who have made or are making an impression in the world of farming.
Among those sharing their stories was Seandún Macra’s Michelle O’Callaghan, who is contesting the upcoming national Macra presidential race.
Michelle discussed issues for women in the sector and about how to get more women involved by “instilling confidence from an early age and not to divide the work around the farm/household by gender amongst children”.
Her message of “Empower a woman, empower a nation” left something to think about and made an impact on everyone at the event.
After her impressive talk, Michelle was presented with flowers from the UCC Macra committee. Following the event , UCC Macra hosted a bingo night in association with the university’s Suas society.
Tuesday kicked off with tea and scones on campus, and a Blind Date-themed event.
Yesterday, the midpoint of Macra week, was marked with an obstacle course influenced by farming to test students and to find UCC’s Ultimate Farmer.
Last night was “Macra around the fireside” with UCC Rovers providing the fire in The Amphitheatre.
Today the celebrations will continue with the Quidditch Cup — a magical Harry Potter-themed championship, but without the flying in which some 16 teams of six vying for the Quidditch Cup.
Participants, or Muggles, will use broom sticks and balls to compete against each other in events from 11am at the college’s Lower Grounds.
Tonight, in association with UCC Trad Soc, a céilí will take place in The Beggarman at 8pm and all are welcome.
