The event, in the Firgrove Hotel, kicked off with club chairperson Aileen Gallagher outlining the key aim of the club’s mental health awareness campaign — that it’s ok not to always be ok.
A representative from Headstrong spoke of how vital it is for a young person to have one secure adult in their life, be it a parent, a teacher, or a friend.
Kay Dawson, a local representative, spoke of how tough if can be getting knocked back in life, and how important it is for people to be nice to each other.
One club member then spoke of her battle with depression.
She told of a perfect life on paper, but revealed some days all she could do was cry.
She sought help from doctors and psychologists, and was prescribed medication, but now realises that depression is part of her life.
Another member told of the challenges he faced when he had brain cancer. He said that he joined Mitchelstown Macra when he was at a low point and a weekly sports night really gave him a boost.
Mairead Allen, club PRO said: “I was in tears at such inspirational stories from our speakers, to hear their real-life stories was a privilege and I cannot thank them enough for being part of our mental health awareness campaign.”
Chairperson Aileen added: “Our campaign was kicked-off on a high with a room full of people who were there to help us stamp out the stigma, I encourage anyone in the local area to take part in our campaign as we plan on making a difference.”
To follow on from the event, the club is running yoga classes every Monday night from March 9 in Mitchelstown Leisure Centre at a cost of just €3.
