The 'bachelors' are comprised of real-life farmer Tony Coffey and retired civil servant Sean Murphy. The duo have kept rural Ireland in stitches for the past 26 years. It is fitting that they are now to shoot a new film annually for the Ploughing Championships, which they’ve loyally attended every year for the past 26 years.

Their comedy act, Bachelors in Trouble, has spawned numerous DVDs and untold performances around the Munster region, and brought them great success since they came up with the idea for the skit back in 1989.

“The story of Bachelors in Trouble is of two bachelor farmers, brothers, who live on the farm, and never married,” says Tony, 68, from Leamybrien, Co Waterford, who plays the part of Tom Coffey.

“The farm was willed to one brother, Jack (played by Sean Murphy), but Jack wouldn’t marry or bring a woman onto the farm so Tom couldn’t either, for fear the woman would walk off with half the farm,” explains Tony.

“They still sleep in the one bed, which originally belonged to their parents, and over the years different women have come and gone.

“Their ideal woman would be a lady who could throw two bales of hay, milk the cows, feed the hens, go to the creamery, herd the cattle and get the dinner as well. It’s the stupidity of it that people love, though it’s also about real life!”
