No option but to shoot wild heifer at Limerick mart

The Limousin heifer broke free at the mart in Kilmallock on Monday and had to be shot as a safety precaution.

According to Denis Kirby of GVM in Killmallock, “The heifer did not venture beyond the mart grounds.”

He said, ‘”We took the view that it was better to be safe than sorry.”

“It is very rare that an animal would be shot.”

He said, “There was no threat to human safety.”

Every effort was made to coax the animal back into the pens but the heifer was too unruly.

Mr Kirby confirmed that. “An individual was brought in to shoot the animal.”

“She was corralled into a ditch and was shot there.”

The GVM mart in Killamallock attracts buyers and sellers from all over the country and has undergone significant improvement works in recent times.

It is one of the busiest marts in Ireland, with close to 2,500 cattle and calves on offer during the peak supply months in the spring.
