Spotlight on fourth-generation farmers at the edge of the Atlantic

Richard and Lorena Austin and their two children, Dara, and Liliana, live and farm on the edge of the Atlantic.

Richard moved to Louisburg from Co Meath to work on his uncle’s farm.

He is now the fourth generation of his family to farm the holding, which was purchased by his great grandfather in 1883.

He decided to gradually increase the dairy enterprise on the farm, up to an 65-cow herd currently.

In 2007, Richard switched from Friesian to Montbeliard.

“I like the production from these animals. They are quite robust, which is a big advantage living in this part of the world,” he said.

Richard’s wife Lorena is originally from Gijon, Spain. She works full-time with Allergan, in Westport, but really enjoys living on the farm in Louisburg.
