Natural avozilla proves a hit

Found growing in the natural forest of Limpopo in South Africa, the world’s largest avocado, the Avozilla, has proved a consumer hit.

It will be even more famous after this week, when it represents Tesco in the Innovation of the Year category at the FPC Fresh Awards organised by the UK’s fresh produce trade association.

It is produced by Westfalia, the largest avocado grower in Southern Africa, which has 15 scientists and technicians who focus on fruit varietal development, innovation and environmental matters.

“To clear up some confusion on the matter, Avozilla is not genetically modified and has not been treated with growth-enhancing chemicals. Avozilla is a natural monster fruit with superb eating quality,” said a Westfalia spokesperson. The company says it is a cross between the West Indian avocado which grows large but is typically watery and slightly sweet, and the Guatemalan avocado which has the typical buttery, nutty avocado taste.

Only very few Avozilla trees are bearing fruit at this stage, but Westfalia will be planting additional trees.

Tesco say the fruit is around seven inches long, weighing on average 1.3 kg, large enough to make a family-sized helping of guacamole.

Emma Bonny, a salads and vegetable buyer at Tesco, said the Avozilla raises the profile of the avocado category, supporting its transition from a niche food item to an everyday favourite.
