Installation aid provision in CAP must be used, says Macra president
Speaking at last night’s launch of Macra na Feirme’s Rally weekend, Mr O’Dowd said a new installation aid package would give a vital lift to young trained farmers in setting up in the industry for the long haul.
“Under Pillar II of the recently concluded CAP negotiations, there is explicit provision made for installation aid,” he said.
“This measure can be financed more favourably under the rural development programme. The fact that the EU are prepared to agree to such a high co-financing ratio means that installation aid is a key component of incentivising young farmers’ entry to agriculture.”
He added that the CAP reforms are framed to ensure that the money is spent on what it is intended for, demanding objective criteria and a business plan from applicants.
“I believe that if set up in the correct way the package will be a significant boost to young farmers and consequently have a positive effect on rural communities, thus meeting the objectives of the pillar two rural development plan.”
The Macra annual agricultural conference takes place this Sunday in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow. The theme is “New Cap, New Era”. Guest speakers include MEP Máiréad McGuinness and Professor Alan Renwick of UCD.
