CAP funding must prioritise active and productive farmers, says IFA

Active, productive farmers must be prioritised for all monies available through Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 of future CAP funds, according to the IFA’s executive council.

The president of the Irish Farmers Association, John Bryan, has called on the Government to urgently make a commitment to 50:50 co-financing for the next Rural Development Programme, and to provide national top-ups for vulnerable sectors.

“The IFA draft submission will be discussed at every county executive in the coming weeks, and the executive council will meet again before the deadline of Sept 20 to finalise its position,” he said.

Mr Bryan’s statement followed a comprehensive discussion on the options available to Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney for the national implementation of CAP reform.

The group concluded that “active, productive farmers” must remain a priority for Ireland.
