ICSA urges farmers to insure against health and safety risks

Under the deal, which is to be delivered by Sparrow Insurance Brokers, up to 10,000 ICSA members will be able to avail of a €75 discount on their annual insurance policy. The partnership promises competitively priced cover for property, business interruption, liability, agricultural vehicle, and farm homes.

ICSA general secretary Eddie Punch said: “There are almost 140,000 active farms in Ireland, and every one of them is exposed to any number of risks on a daily basis, be it as a result of not being aware of the procedures to mitigate risk, or simple misfortune.

“We are delighted to have forged this partnership with Zurich and Sparrow Insurances to be able to offer our members security in a business which oftentimes involves significant risk.”

The announcement comes on the back of recent HSA data that shows the agriculture sector has the highest number of workplace fatalities in Ireland. Approximately 500,000 people are exposed to health and safety risks while carrying out farm-related activities.

Michael Doyle, head of Agri Business at Zurich, said: “Having the most comprehensive and competitive insurance policy is an absolute necessity for farmers and we are pleased to be able to introduce this new product which is specifically designed to meet the needs of farmers.

“Through this partnership with the ICSA and Sparrow Insurance Brokers, we are committed to offering farmers an insurance solution that puts their business first and protects their livelihood at the best possible price.”

Sparrow Insurance is a brokerage with a strong farming focus, and well established connections in the wider agricultural community. The company has offices in Portlaoise, Thurles, Nenagh, and Roscrea.
