Training course spotlighton farmers hit by effects of weather
The initiative was launched by the Farm Family Support Service working group at the North and East Kerry Development (NEKD) local rural development company.
They have also delivered special advice leaflets to every farmhouse in their area of operation, which includes most of Co Kerry north of Killarney.
According to NEKD, 2012 was a tough year for all farmers in the county, leaving everybody under pressure, and leaving some finding it very difficult to stay positive.
The Farm Family Support Service working group urged farmers to talk about what’s going on, and their leaflet suggested what farmers can do and where they can go for some extra help and support.
Also on offer is a two-hour training and awareness programme to help people who deal with farmers become more aware of the signs of farmers in trouble, and how to respond.
The leaflets sent to farmers include advice that Kerry Group shares were traditionally kept for a rainy day — which may now have arrived for some shareholders.
The leaflets also contain practical advice, such as selling “passenger” cattle to ease fodder problems.
Farmers are advised to watch for signs of stress like irritability, increased drinking, loss of appetite, and to take action by talking to family or trusted friends about problems.
“You should never be too busy to stop for a chat,” farmers are advised.
