Princess Anne meets National Stud’s blue-blood residents

The Irish National Stud has had its second royal visit in 10 months, with the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, arriving recently.

Her mother, Queen Elizabeth, visited the stud in May, 2011.

The privately-organised visit included inspection of the stud’s thoroughbreds, such as flagship sire Invincible Spirit, and Big Bad Bob.

Irish National Stud chief executive John Osborne and Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney were among the reception committee.

Mr Osborne said: “Princess Anne’s knowledge of the equine industry is obviously exceptional, and we were proud to be able to showcase some of our finest active and also retired racehorses against the beautiful backdrop of the National Stud.”

Princess Anne saw a pony-riding and carriage driving display by Riding for the Disabled Association members, to whom she presented rosettes. She also met retired racehorses, such as Vintage Crop, Florida Pearl and Moscow Flyer. The Princess was accompanied by her husband, Vice-Admiral Timothy Laurence.

For well over 100 years, the Irish National Stud at Tully, Co Kildare, has been a working stud farm.
