Huge sheds on Kerry farm

WHO knows what lies under the soil of this 72-acre farm at Tullahennel, Asdee, Co Kerry? Last year an ancient Celtic brooch fell out of a lump of turf cut from bog at Tullahennel North, Listowel, not too far from this farm, which is just on the market with Christy Buckley Auctioneer.

And this property also comes with its own slice of heritage, but of a much later vintage — the sale includes an impressive, estate courtyard of buildings, in a neo-Gothic style.

In fact, the lofted outhouses are so big that it’s almost like playing in a foot ball pitch, says Buckley, who initially was looking for somewhere in the region of €600,000 for the 72-acre, residential property.

However, by the time he had left the farm on his first inspection, he already had an offer of €700,000, he says.

“It was a massive estate in its day and the lofts they have in it — you’d swear you were in a playing pitch to the see the size of it.

“The land is in need of TLC, but you only have to look over the ditch to see what the farm could be like.”

The farm has been leased for some time and the main residence, which is part of a the courtyard or buildings, lies neglected, but could be restored, or could even convert to other uses.

The yard, which at one time formed a quadrangle of buildings, was divided in the past and part is now in use as an equestrian centre and functions as a separate entity with separate access.

For sale by private treaty, the agent is open to offers in excess of the current offers for what he describes an a level, easily worked drystock farm.

Meanwhile, the same agent is selling a 60-acre holding at Dromore, Dromina, in north Cork and is prepared to sell in five lots, including the entire. The land, which has road frontage available for each lot, is guided as a fairly bullish €12,000.

The property, which is laid out in old field patterns, has a small bit of waste and is being offered in lots of 12, 13, 15 and eight-acre lots.

Worth a look over for any farmer seeking more ground but within sensible parameters.
