Drake joins the top flight at Dairy Show
NORTH Kilkenny farmer John C Murphy broke into the top flight of Irish dairy breeders with a surprise Irish Examiner championship at last Saturday’s National Dairy Show.
Entered in the confined cow in milk class for exhibitors who have not won first or second prizes at any national show in the previous three years showing, the Murphys’ five-year-old cow, Ardnasalem Drake Walburga, won that class, and was declared confined cow champion.
This entitled her to join the show championship line-up, shown by Padraig Murphy, and show judge Mark Nutsford from Lancashire, England, came up with a surprise when he tapped her out.
However, the champ wasn’t an unknown at Millstreet, having been placed sixth there in last year’s four-year-old cow class.
Reserve champion Baldonnel Stormatic Raquel hadn’t been high on the pedigree watchers lists either, Cyril Dowling. She also won the 3-year-old heifer/cow in milk class for Co Dublin exhibitor Cyril Dowling. But the honourable mention for Baileys reserve champion, Hallow Lheros Indianink, owned by the Jones family of Co Wexford, put the judges rankings in perspective
