MOVEMENT in lamb prices at the factories is limited this week, but at least positive for farmers, with a marginal improvement in prices on offer at some plants.

The trend in quoted prices ranges from stable to stronger by up to 5 cent/kg. In the marts, there was also a sharper tone to the trade at Monday’s sales.

Factory prices range from an all-in 450 cent/kg at Moyvalley Meats to 440 cent/kg plus quality bonus at the other processors, with prices at the Dawn and ICM plants increased by 5 cent/kg compared to last week.

In the marts, there was a strong trade at Fermoy on Monday where the prices edged upwards slightly. Butchers lambs sold for €100/head to €117/head or €48 over to €63 over. The factory lambs ranged to €101/head or €55 over.

There was 1,050 head at Kilkenny Mart on Monday, where the trade was a bit sharper than the previous week. Butchers paid €50 over to €57 over, and factory lots sold for €43 over to €56 over. There was also a good trade for the stores, at €40 over to €52 over.

In Britain, prices last weekend were unchanged at the equivalent of 425 cent/kg (151p/lb).

In France, prices for the limited volumes of Irish grade 1 lamb getting on to the market were reported at up to 445 cent/kg by the weekend, despite strong British supplies.
