Thinning requires licenses and stack measurements

THINNING is now taking place in many farm forests planted during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Thinning requires licenses and stack measurements

Before any felling takes place, it is necessary to have a felling licence in place. Two types of felling licences exist, a limited felling licence and a general felling licence.

While thinning is being carried out, it is important to be able to accurately measure how much timber is being removed from the forest.

One of the best methods is stack measurement, which can be an accurate means for a forest owner to calculate the volume of timber that has been removed from the forest, once the full procedure is carried out correctly.

These issues were the main topics on the Teagasc forestry stand at the Tullamore Show.
