FAVOURABLE economic growth trends, and high-crop yields in the next harvest season, are needed to avoid a return to a global food crisis, said the head of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation this week.

This comes as a surprise to Irish farmers, who are ploughing up more land than usual to plant crops this spring, and who substantially increased their winter cereal area last autumn.

They are playing their small part in feeding the world, which is the basic requirement of the world’s farmers. Consumers rightly expect that governments and farmers together can achieve that objective. After all, farming is a highly-subsidised and governed business.
