Germany hit as dioxin in animal feed scare leads to temporary quarantine

GERMANY has been hit by a repeat of the dioxin in animal feed scare which closed Ireland’s pig industry two years ago.

About 1,000 poultry and pig farms have been temporarily quarantined in northern Germany, due to dioxin-contaminated industrial fats being substituted for vegetable fats in animal feed.

Up to nine feed manufacturers may be involved.

The dioxin, which can cause cancer in humans, was detected in eggs and poultry meat. A biodiesel producer is being investigated.

A North Rhine Westphalia government representative said the contamination must be the work of criminals or extreme negligence.
