FARMERS who think they will exceed the 170kg of nitrogen per hectare limit this year have until Friday, April 3, to apply for a derogation.

Unlike last year, they cannot apply for a derogation on their single payment form.

A new, separate application form and full details of the system are available on the department’s www.agriculture.gov.ie website. Forms (and copies of 2008 nitrogen and phosphorus statements) can also be obtained from local district veterinary offices, or from the Nitrates Section, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford (tel: 053-9163444).

Intensive grassland farmers are allowed to exceed the general 170kg limit for nitrogen from livestock manure on their farm, up to a limit of 250kg, provided they have a derogation in place. These farmers have already received a copy of their 2008 nitrogen and phosphorus statements, to assist them in deciding if they need a derogation.

A Nitrates Calculator, developed by IFA in association with AIB Bank and IFA Skillnets, is available for farmers unsure if they require a nitrates derogation.

IFA Environment chairman Pat Farrell said: “This calculator is a free and valuable service, available to all IFA members and can be downloaded from the IFA website at www.ifa.ie or the www.ifarm.ie website. The calculator will reduce the time it takes to prepare a fertiliser plan and will assist farmers prepare a detailed record and calculation of on-farm nutrient use.”
