A RECYCLING plant at Fenagh, Co Carlow, was this week helping the Department of Agriculture and the Food Safety Authority with their investigation of pork contamination.

Recycling process may have gone horribly wrong

Recycling packaged food which is no longer fit for sale, and turning it into products for the pet food, animal feed, technical and biofuel industries is a long-established practice.

Such material, which was originally fit for human consumption, but is becoming short-dated or out of date, may include meat and dairy products, food factory waste, food waste from supermarkets and other retail outlets, and food waste from wholesalers and distributors. It may also include products that fail quality standards, and damaged or recalled products. Recyclers must be EU and national rules compliant.
