Beware of conservation designation, warns IFA

MORE than one-tenths of land in the country is being proposed for special hen harrier conservation measures, and IFA has warned farmers it could bring problems for them.

Beware of conservation designation, warns IFA

Once the designation of a conservation area is registered on the farm deeds it becomes a liability on the farm and can affect the sale value because of the land use limitations, IFA’s National Rural Development Executive Secretary Gerry Gunning told farmers at a meeting in Templeglantine, Co Limerick. He advised them to appeal against designation if they had any worries about it, regardless of any assurances they might be given. They have until February 8 to lodge appeals against hen harrier designations.

While most farmers whose land is listed have been formally notified, farmers who are aware of designations in their area should check the list of townlands to see if they have been included, even if they have not received formal notification.
