Cyprus hit by EU’s latest FMD outbreak

THE EU has banned all exports of fresh meat, live animals and milk products from Cyprus, following confirmation of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the island country.

At the same time, the EU has allowed exports of meat, livestock and dairy products to resume from Britain, but excluding livestock from the high-risk area around the county of Surrey in southern England where foot and mouth was detected earlier this year.

Cyprus has not had foot and mouth for more than 40 years. One third of the island’s livestock are within an exclusion zone around the outbreak, at Larnaca.
