FARM deeds, closely guarded in bank vaults, solicitors offices, and fire proof home safes from one generation to the next, are to go electronic by 2010.

Under the newly formed Property Registration Authority, all deeds will be centrally held in electronic form, bringing the paper records to an end.

However, it is likely that many of the redundant deeds will be retained as archive material of sentimental and historical value. They contain a mine of information on land ownership going back through generations of families and changes of ownership, and details of rights of ways and incumberances (conditions of title). It is claimed that using electronic deeds of property will be more efficient, faster, and cost effective.
