Sorghum option as EU passes on genetically modified grain

LIVESTOCK in Europe will become familiar this winter with the taste of sorghum.

Fifth in importance among the world’s cereals — after wheat, rice, maize and barley — sorghum is the most important cereal in arid regions, and a staple foodstuff in the tropics of Asia and Africa.

But it is from the US that it is now flooding into Europe. In the first three weeks of September, 646,000 tonnes of US sorghum was traded to Europe.
