Milk broker offers tempting price deal
A new brokering co-op, “Danish Milk”, is recruiting dairy farmers at a fast rate and exporting their milk to Germany for at least 10 cent per litre more than they were paid by Arla, which buys 97% of Danish milk.
Around 800 dairy farmers attended a meeting and were quick to pledge their support to the new co-op.
Arla have been forced to increase milk prices to about 33 cent, claiming it can go no higher because of its long-term contracts with retailers at current prices. But the group could still face a mass exodus.
Nearer home, a better milk price in Northern Ireland has been attracting the attention of cottish farmers, and European milk buyers are also looking at Britain, which has had the lowest EU milk prices for many years.
British dairy farmers also have a fall in July milk supplies to bargain with. Deliveries were almost 9.5% below quota, taking the deficit for the year to 7.4%.
