Farm for sale at top Blackwater fishery
The north Cork holding runs to 42 acres and the 33,500 gallons of quota attached is an optional part of the sale, says auctioneer Eamon O’Brien.
Once part of the Careysville estate, the property runs down to the river Blackwater, but doesn’t have shore frontage.
It adjoins Careysville House, which now belongs to the Duke of Devonshire, who has fishing rights on this part of the river.
Ryder Cup star Tiger Woods is one of the regular celebrity visitors who helicopter in for the fishing here.
It’s flanked by excellent farmland. The land is top quality, laid out in grass, says Eamonn O’Brien, but it’s unlikely the holding will be bought by a full-time specialist farmer, as it’s located so close to Fermoy. The holding also has road frontage.
Offers in excess of €850,000 are being sought, and the agent is prepared to sell with or without the quota. There’s a bid of €800,000 already, says Mr O’Brien.
The same agent acted for the purchaser of a substantial farm holding which was sold earlier this year at Graigue, Shanballymore.
Flagged as the biggest farm sale in Munster in early 2005, the property included about 300 acres of land.
The purchaser is believed to be a west Cork farmer, Denis Kingston, said to have paid the bones of €4 million for the land, substantial period house, stock and farm machinery. The farm is mid-way between Mallow and Mitchelstown, and had been used for tillage and grazing. It also came with a quota of 38,500 gallons. The residence dates from 1799 and has a courtyard to the rear.
Vendors Frank and Patricia Comber’s family held the house and lands since 1916.
Christy Buckley was the selling agent for the residential farm holding.
