Farm with a history guide priced at €1.2 million

ONE of the first West Cork hobby farms, where pedigree cows wore coats in winter, is new to the market with the equally new auctioneering firm of Neill Clarke and Co.

Farm with a history guide priced at €1.2 million

The 62 acre farm, a mile from Durrus, has quite a number of dwellings.

The main residence, built in the 1950s, has a whopping 4,000 square feet of space and is in good condition.

The second property is a traditional farmhouse, let out as a holiday home, and there is also a rundown stone farmhouse which could allow for a replacement dwelling on its site.

The farmland has survived in a state of grace and would be ideal for REPS or an organic enterprise, says auctioneer, Neill Clarke.

It was the pet project of its last owner, a retired Colonel who served in India, and the farm was run in “Raj” style, according to locals, with upwards of four people working on the land at any one time.

The pedigree cows were pampered to a degree unheard of even today, still remembered in local lore.

However, the guide price of €1.2m is no laughing matter. The generations who dragged seaweed from the shore to fertilise these West Cork fields would probably turn in their graves at today’s land values.

And it’s likely that this level could be surpassed, even before the auction earmarked for May 5.

It may even be sold before then, says Mr Clarke, as he’s already seen considerable interest in the property.

This being West Cork, agricultural land prices will be overshot, especially with the range of buildings on this farm, and its breathtaking views.
