Conference discusses tillage future

TILLAGE farming, post-decoupling, will be the theme of the Teagasc national tillage conference, which Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan officially opens in the Dolmen Hotel, Carlow on January 26.

Conference discusses tillage future

Dr Jimmy Burke, head of the Teagasc Tillage Research Centre at Oak Park, Carlow, said the conference is taking place against the background of major changes in tillage farming. It is vital for producers to assess what type of tillage operation works best in the new post-reform environment.

Future crop production will have no bearing on EU subsidy payments, with price and profitability resting with the farmer and the vagaries of the market place. Consequently, technical efficiency will be the critical factor influencing profitability and competitiveness, he said.
