Prescription plea to Minister

PHARMACISTS, agricultural co-ops and merchants, agricultural graduates and animal health companies have joined farmers in asking Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan to allow persons other than vets to prescribe certain animal remedies.

Eight organisations asked the Minister to use her discretion on who can write a veterinary prescription, as permitted by EU regulations on usage of animal medicines.

The animal remedies concerned include wormers, lice control, sheep dip, fluid replacement therapy, vitamins, minerals and certain vaccines.

The Irish regulatory system should not be more restrictive than that proposed in the UK, the Minister was told by the Acorn Group of merchants, the Animal and Plant Health Association, the Agricultural Science Association, the Federation of Agrochemical Retail Merchants, the Independent Animal Health Association, the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society, the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association, the Irish Farmers' Association and the Irish Pharmaceutical Union.

They were concerned that a black market could develop.
