IRISH seafood companies who recognise the importance of marketing for the future of the industry were praised in Dublin yesterday.

Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Minister Dermot Ahern announced the Irish Seafood Business Programme, which will be run in 2003 by BIM, will continue the good work achieved by the Marketing Capability Programme (MCP).

Thirty-three of Ireland’s key seafood companies who participated in the 2002 MCP were on hand to receive marketing certificates from BIM and the Marketing Institute.

The MCP, one of the key elements of BIM’s marketing strategy for seafood, was launched in July, 2001 to raise the level of marketing skills and expertise in the sector. The success of the MCP to date, which fast-tracked company marketing efforts, is reflected in an unprecedented commitment of over 3.5m in marketing Mr Ahern said the 3.5m investment to date is proof of its determination to ensure many of these small firms have access to marketing supports o maintain the momentum created by the MCP and to continue to support the industry in the relevant marketing areas the Irish Seafood Business Programme will focus on a number of key aims.
