The opportunity presented by the EU-Japan Centre mission was available only to companies that have been identified by the European Commission as having achieved superior world class manufacturing performance.

Other companies chosen included household names like Daimler, Volvo, Electrolux and Fiat.

The EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation is a venture between the European Commission and the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to promote industrial co-operation between European and Japanese companies.

Gerry Norton, manager of the Greencore Sugar plant in Mallow, Co Cork, represented the company on the mission and had the opportunity to receive first hand insights into world-class Japanese manufacturing facilities including Nissan, Dansco, Kao and Ricoh.

Dr Richard Keegan, Enterprise Ireland, said the mission provides Europe’s leading manufacturers with a unique opportunity to observe and evaluate state-of-the-art manufacturing technology currently operated by Japan’s top companies.

Greencore Sugar managing director Dr Sean Brady said being chosen was well deserved credit for the company and its engineering expertise in particular and he congratulated Mallow plant manager Gerry Norton and all his engineering team for the work they have done to earn this international recognition.
