Super trade for forward bullocks

Marts: Bigger numbers of cattle on offer met with a quieter trade in general for all except the near finished heavy beef animals at yesterday’s sales.
Super trade for forward bullocks

Forward bullocks and heifers expected to be ready for slaughter within the next couple of months were described as “a serious trade” by Ennis manager Martin McNamara and, judging by some of the prices at yesterday’s sale, it was an understatement.

Talk of the day were two Charolais bullocks, one weighing 730kg sold for €1,480 - €750 over €/kg - and another weighed in at 860kg and sold for €1,600 which was almost as much over €/kg. Not far behind was a Limousin bullock scaling 762kg and sold for €1,430 and a lot of four Limousin 712kg which sold for €1,320. Add to that a red Limousin heifer weighing 448kg which sold for €1,210.

More typical of the trade was €200-€400 over for the heavy bullocks and heavy heifers ranging €150-€330 over.

There was a bigger entry at Bandon where prices were maintained for quality bullocks and back €10-€25/head for plainer lots. The heavy bullocks ranged €220-€310 over, lighter animals ranging €200-€340 over and Friesians making €120-€220 over. Five Angus 525kg sold for €795, two Charolais 387kg made €725, and three Herefords 290kg sold for €490.

Heavy heifers were a good trade with best of the continentals making up to €285 over and stores ranging €150-€240 over.

At Kilkenny, heavy bullocks ranged €300-€500 over, medium weights selling at €200-€380 over and stores under 400kg making €200-€350 over. Beef heifers were a strong traded at €250-€400 over and stores made €180-€330 over.
