IFA for cultural integration

MORE than 6,000 migrant workers are employed on farms around the country, mainly in horticulture, and have played a vital role in farm productivity, according to IFA.
IFA for cultural integration

The Association’s President John Dillon last week launched a booklet, Equality and Migrant Workers on the Farm, to provide a basic resource to farmers and others in the agricultural sector to effectively manage the cultural diversity brought by migrants to the farm workplace.

Mr Dillon said, “Cultural diversity is relatively new to Ireland and the farm environment provides the same challenges that exist to cultural integration as any other workplace. By producing this booklet and being involved in Anti Racist Workplace Week, IFA is highlighting the good examples of cultural integration that exist in the agri-sector and encouraging best practice in farm businesses.”

The booklet introduces employers to the Employment Equality Acts, highlights good practice initiatives being taken by farmers and sets out a range of resources that are available to assist farmers in promoting equality in a culturally diverse work setting.

Niall Crowley of the Equality Authority said, “The farming sector, no more than other sectors of the economy, faces the challenge of ensuring workplaces are non discriminatory, take account of cultural diversity and promote full equality in practice.”
