Dairygold board to elect chairman
Outgoing vice-chairman John Walsh, Drombanna branch in Co Limerick, was tipped yesterday as the likely chairman, but a contest for the post is not ruled out.
All but one of the eight outgoing directors who sought re-election in this week's regional ballots were returned to the board.
Liam Foley, Donoughmore, a former IFA national dairy committee chairman, and Flor Riordan, Carrigaline, a past president of Macra na Feirme, are new members.
The elections, following the resignation of nine directors after a vote of no confidence in the board was passed at the annual general meeting, involved six regional committees comprising 209 members.
Liam O'Flynn, Glanworth, one of the shareholders who supported the vote of no confidence in the board at the AGM, said yesterday he was disillusioned with the outcome.
Something was very wrong when the majority of shareholders voted no confidence in the board and the committee that apparently represents the shareholders re-voted them back in.
"Shareholders need to think about it. One way of solving it would be an extraordinary general meeting, which would attempt to remove the 209 committee members and have fresh elections in each area," he said.
Mr O'Flynn said they felt at the AGM that shareholders were finally using the power they had, but had never used.
The ten board members are William Blake, Vincent Buckley, Liam Foley, Con Hallahan, William Hickey, Pat Kelleher, Terence O'Donnell (Mitchelstown), Terence O'Donnell (Kildorrery), Flor Riordan and John Walsh.
