Tillage farmers must plan for future without beet

“YOU’RE depending solely on the market now, and sugar beet is on the way out”, will be the blunt message to growers at next Thursday’s (January 26) Teagasc National Tillage Conference.
Tillage farmers must plan for future without beet

Top tillage farmer Larry O’Reilly of Ballyraggett, Co Kilkenny, and Teagasc specialist advisor Michael Hennessy, will speak on decoupled tillage farming.

Other speakers include French farmer J P Langlois-Berthelot, and Prof David Powlson from Rothamsted Research Centre in the UK, who will explain how soil organic carbon might be used to improve yields.

Teagasc staff will provide updates on the outlook for biofuels, early drilling of winter wheat, and cost effective disease control in cereals.

The conference venue is the Dolmen Hotel, Carlow. Dr Jimmy Burke, Head of the Teagasc Tillage Research Centre at Oak Park, Carlow said the conference is taking place against the background of major change in tillage farming and it is vital for producers to carefully assess what type of tillage operation works best in the new post reform environment.
