ACCORDING to Teagasc, there is unwarranted concern among some farmers who traditionally sold silage or hay, and fear that this practice may not be acceptable under the new Single Payment System.

There is no basis for this concern, according to Teagasc advisers, who point out that selling silage or hay as a cash generating system of farming is fully within the SPS rules.

“Generating an income from the sale of these types of produce is no different to selling grain or sugar beet off the farm”, pointed out a Teagasc spokesperson.
