Dawn launches new low-salt ham
Health nutrition experts have been warning that too much salt is bad for people, who are consuming nine grams a day when they should be eating only six grams.
The food industry is accordingly being urged to lower the amount of salt used in products.
In a significant move, Dawn Farm Foods, part of the Queally Group in Naas, Co Kildare, has announced the launch of a cooked ham which is reduced in salt by more than 25%, as well as being low in fat.
It said the new ham contains less than 3% fat and less than 2% salt, while its turkey breast product contains less than 2% of both salt and fat.
The company said it had teamed up with Unislim, the longest running slimming and health organisation in Ireland, in a direct response to consumer demand for healthier options at the deli counter.
It notes that with one-in-five children in Ireland confirmed as overweight, parents in particular are increasingly concerned with choosing healthier, convenient products when shopping.
Dawn Farms’ Ray Oldham said research shows consumers are making healthier lifestyle choices every day.
It wants to make healthy eating a simple and convenient choice.
Unislim Ireland’s Fiona Gratzer said foods that offer reduced salt and a low fat content will help towards preventing obesity and heart disease in Ireland.
Dawn Farms has been supplying cooked meats to supermarkets in Ireland for more than 20 years.
