Plaques indicate quality food

AN outdoor plaque launched in Dublin yesterday will encourage the public to choose Féile Bia restaurants, pubs and catering establishments when eating out.

Bord Bia chief executive Michael Duffy said the plaque will increase visibility of Féile Bia’s 1,290 members and improve consumer awareness. “We are encouraging consumers to support the scheme by looking out for the plaque and choosing to eat in these establishments.

“Féile Bia members have made a commitment to source quality-assured food which is traceable from farm to fork,” he said.

Research carried out last year by the Consumer Liaison Panel, set up by the Department of Agriculture and Food, showed that 68% of consumers indicated a preference for specific country of origin information on menus.

Food Minister Noel Treacy, who launched the plaque initiative, praised Féile Bia members for their commitment to sourcing their meat and eggs from quality assurance schemes and their ability to provide country of origin information for these products.

He said tourists and visitors see plaques on buildings, celebrating the birthplace of famous writers and musicians.

“Now when they wish to pause for a meal or a snack, they can follow the Féile Bia trail to be assured of fine and enjoyable experiences,” he said.

Leading chef Derry Clarke, a Féile Bia member, said consumers have the right to know that the food they are eating is of the highest quality and is certified from farm to fork.
